Did you hear about the one where...

...Wade got stuck in a pillowcase?

No? Well, read on.

It was nap time for Wade and I was getting Lily cleaned up from lunch (our schedules rarely align lately) when Wade started to cry. Usually he saves that for bedtime, so I figured he was hurt. I rushed into his room to find him squirming around on his bed, shouting, "get me outta here!" Yes, he was stuck inside of his pillowcase. Legs and all. I got him all out and untangled and the kid was a wreck, really scared. I kind of get it- a dark, confined place with no way to escape... I tried to comfort him and reminded him that pillowcases are only for pillows, but I just kept thinking that Mark was going to ask me what happened when I went out and I was going to have to say the words, "Wade got stuck inside of his pillowcase." I had to hide my face so Wade couldn't see my giggling, and when I finally told Mark, I could barely get the words out I was laughing so hard.

Poor kid was so traumatized that he actually slept during his nap time. When he woke up I asked him why he climbed inside of his pillowcase. He said, "because I thought I could get out." I guess that's as good a reason as any...

8 months!

Well, yesterday actually. I can't seem to get this done on time lately. Oh well, I won't even remember by the time the next month rolls around :)

Lily is now...

Pulling up to standing from sitting. She can't get to sitting by herself yet (whew), so we can leave the crib mattress where it is. For now.

Taking a few steps when she's holding onto our fingers. She's trying so hard to get somewhere!

Saying, "mama." So cute. Except she only says it in the middle of the night when she wakes up. Sigh.

Has 7 teeth. Hasn't gotten in that matching 8th one yet. But at least we have a break from teething!

Getting up on her hands and knees and rocking back and forth. It won't be long now. Watch out, Wade :)

Taking a bath in the big bath now. She kept trying to climb out of the baby tub, so the big girl tub it is!

Starting to eat finger foods. Started with organic Cheerio-type cereal, which she liked the crunch of, but not the taste. Then we tried baby puffs, she really didn't like those either. Next was yogurt melts, but I got the peach ones and they are super sour. Then, yesterday I gave her a few chunks of my avacado (which she had recently decided she didn't like anymore), and she loved it. I guess she's just an all-natural girl :)

Happy 8 months sweet girl!

Other random doings

Closely inspecting her cereal
We started giving Lily cereal & little puffs to try her teeth on. She doesn't especially like the taste, but she is definitely intrigued and likes to chew them, so she tolerates the flavor :)

What do you want me to do with this?

Silent Night

Just kidding! Nothing about our nights (or days for that matter) are silent :)

Christmas this year was a little more hectic. We had two kids to gift for and half the time (it seemed like) to get it all together and wrapped. Plus we had two schedules to consider. We went to the candlelight service on Christmas Eve again and although Lily loved the music, she definitely couldn't sit still. I ended up sitting in the aisle with her and letting her play on the floor. Wade, of course, wanted to talk the entire time and flitted back and forth between Uuma and us.

After church, everyone came back to our house for cookies and hot chocolate. After a few hours of eating, chatting and playing, the kids started to get tired and everyone hit the road to get a good night's sleep (ha!) before Christmas. *Side note- they are ALL sick. It's impossible to tell which one it is when one of them coughs, because they ALL have the same congested, terrible cough. Even Lily.*

Reading Twas the Night Before Christmas to sister
Then, the boy wouldn't go to sleep. Last year he understood Santa and presents, but this year he understood that Santa was going to come. To our house. While he was sleeping. The anticipation was just killing him and every time we peeked in on him, he was just staring at his ceiling, wide awake. Around 11, he finally crashed out and we could finally set presents out. Around 4:00, he came into our room to sleep and told me that Santa had been there and put presents in a big circle around the tree. I told him that it was still too early and he was fine with that, but wanted to know, "Will tomorrow be Christmas, where we can spend time with family and friends?" I told him that it was and he went back to sleep until 8!

Santa was here!
When he got up, he TORE through the presents and we finally had to wake Lily up around 8:30 (she was up a bit during the night), so he could "help" her open her presents too. She enjoyed all the chaos and tried out a few of her new toys. Wade kept searching for more presents to open, but after it sunk in that there were no more, he gave in and played with his new toys. His favorites this year were, by far, his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle guys from Nene and Papa K. He also really liked his Star Wars guys and new pirate ship. They all played together- usually on the pirate ship with the Turtles defeating Darth Vader. As Mark said, kids don't discriminate :)

We got around and headed over to Shelly's for breakfast, which was sooo good! I'm not sure what's in it, but she makes a wonderful egg casserole that I look forward to all year. The kids played with their new toys and after awhile we headed home to nap (ha!). Lily fell instantly asleep in the car since it was way past her nap time and slept for a few hrs when we got home. Wade did not.

Later we went to Mary & Dave's for dinner. Dave made turkey and ham, which were delicious, as always. The kids played and opened presents, while we ate, drank and chatted until Lily started to lose it (she never got her afternoon nap and was past exhausted) and then we headed home. She fell asleep in the car again and I transferred her to her bed and she stayed asleep (for awhile anyway). Wade pretty much fell right to sleep too. Mark looked at me after they were both in bed and said, "Man, Christmas is rough." Yup. But so worth it to see Wade's expression and enjoyment of the whole thing. He kept thanking us all day long and saying (his new favorite expression), "You're the best!"

Another great Christmas Eve & Christmas day! I'm so lucky to be a part of a group of people like this. Although they are technically my in-laws and I am only their daughter-in-law, I have never once felt like anything except family. I feel the same way- they are truly my second family, my home away from home. Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas!

My 2 cents

I usually don't post my opinion about these things. And certainly not on FB, where people are forced to read my opinion. However, I figure if you are reading my blog, you WANT to hear my opinion. Or at least look at the pictures. But this time, no pictures, just rambling thoughts. Sorry in advance :)

As a mom, I am deeply saddened by the loss of those poor babies in the shooting in CT. I can't imagine kissing you child goodbye on a normal day (50% of them (at least) probably argued about clothing, breakfast, getting ready, etc.) and never seeing them alive again. Ever. I can't imagine how those moms are feeling (especially if they argued with their baby that morning). I can't imagine how those kids must have felt in their last few minutes of life. Terrified. Confused. I just can't fathom it.

I do understand that in times of tragedy, some people get angry. They blame whatever is easiest. But here is my two cents. Bad guys will always find a way to get guns. There it is. Have you ever heard a potential mass murderer say, "Well, I was going to go on a killing spree, but it was so hard for me to get a gun that I changed my mind and planted a garden instead." Have you ever heard a psychopath admit, "You know, I had thought about killing my family and myself, but it was illegal for me to obtain the kind of gun I really wanted to use. So I had to find a legal way to do it and it just took so darn long that I decided to live happily ever after instead." No. Never. I read a bumper sticker one time that said, "If guns kill people, do pencils misspell words?" Nope. Never have, never will. Bad guys will always find a way to get their hands on a gun. Or weapon of some sort. Ban whatever  you want. Make it harder to get guns. Whatever. Give a bad guy some baking soda, a tire and coat hanger and he'll come up with a different sort of weapon anyway.

Another two cents. So I guess I'm up to four cents by now. Someone somewhere stated that the shooter had Aspergers. So what? I have taught enough students with autism and sensory issues to know that Aspergers doesn't make you evil. It doesn't make you want to kill babies. There's obviously something else going on here. Don't make this an autism thing.

Anyway. If you made it all the way to the end, thanks for reading. If not, it was nice to just get this out of my system. Have a wonderful day. And those of you with kids, don't forget to give them a hug (along with a kiss and a five at our house) and say goodbye every time they walk out that door. And tell them that you love them. Always.

Well, hello there!

We're still loving Christmastime and the cooler weather around here. Not that that means anything to those of you in MI or MN :) But, at least it's Texas cool!

Here is what we've been up to lately:

Lots of Christmas crafts this year. Wade & I made a sock snowman (Which made me reminisce about my old fouth grade team. We'd make these with our students every year :) ), a scrapbook paper tree (which was good for teaching Wade how to order the papers from shortest to longest), and painted a snowman with "snow paint." It's actually shaving cream mixed with elmer's glue. It dries really puffy and is actually very cool. I helped Wade with the Christmas tree and sock snowman, but he made the face and everything else on the painted snowman all by himself, it turned out pretty cute!

Wade's sock snowman. Notice him in the background making some type of booby trap with the Christmas ribbon.
...and distracted.
Wade's Christmas art
We've been trying to do something Christmas-y every day, just like last year. It's a little harder this year, trying to work around Lily's naps and such, but it's still working out and Wade & I are having fun :) We actually talked Mark into a real tree this year (as long as he doesn't have to cut it down himself), which we went and picked out at Lowes yesterday. Our trip involved Wade/ninja climbing onto and jumping off of any elevated surface, and doing fancy kicks and tumbles (in true ninja fasion) and then a full fledged tantrum as we left over chocolate milk/gatorade/his own small Christmas tree/you name it. Merry Christmas!

Lily is trying so hard to crawl, she wants to get around and chase after things so bad. She's able to balance up on her hands and knees now, and today she got up there herself. It's only a matter of time now!

Wade has really taken a liking to his sister lately. He wants to "play" with her all the time. Sometimes playing with her involves dumping his millions of stuffed animals all around her until she's so overwhelmed that she cries, sometimes he reads her a story, or sometimes he plays "put the blanket over the baby's head," which sounds dangerous, but it's actually his version of peek-a-boo and she finds it hilarious. Actually she finds anything that he does hilarious. It's fun to watch them interact more and more. Which there will be plenty of when she's mobile. Wade won't know what to do then, when he can't get rid of her :)

Terrible picture, but she's so pleased that he's hanging out with her.

Random picture of Wade setting up a battle.

Not letting me add any more captions again, sorry about that! Something weird is going on with Blogger. Or possibly (more likely) operator error.

A visit with Santa

Today we braved the mall to visit Santa. Wade was very excited to ask Santa for a "big Buzz Lightyear" and to get a candy cane. Lily was TERRIFIED! She took one look at Santa and burst into tears. Oh well, it makes for a cute picture :)

Afterward, we wandered the mall with the boys. They got to ride the train and the carousel and play at the Disney Store. While we were there Wade found a different toy that he decided he'd rather ask Santa for. So, on the way out he stopped by and updated his wish list :) There was no line and Santa was kind enough to listen to his request.

Here, I'll just help you with that...
My, my, my. Don't I look good!

For some reason, I couldn't add captions to the bottom pictures... So, you can make them up yourselves :)

And so it begins...

...the holiday season! I LOVE Christmastime in case I've never mentioned it before. You can never start the festivities too early in my opinion. And somehow I talked Mark into a real Christmas tree this year. Now, if I could just get him to get the decorations down from the attic...

We decided last minute to visit Georgetown and watch the Christmas parade and check out the booths in "the square." It was a beautiful day and Wade got to see Santa- twice! When I started to upload pictures on my blog, I found out that I deleted them all but this one. I hate that feeling :(

Waiting for the Santa float

We've had a few incidents with Wade and Miss Star. The rule is that he CANNOT touch her, otherwise she loses her magic powers and can't fly to Santa at night to give him a report about Wade's behavior. We've had her out less than a week and he's already touched her twice. So, we've written to Santa to apologize and he's sent us magic dust to help her fly again. I think she'll need to find a place to roost up high from here on out...

My big boy turned 4!

Last week we celebrated Wade's 4th birthday! Wade began the day by telling me that we should probably throw out all his old clothes because they were too small, he could only wear big clothes now that he was 4. Oh, and now he could reach things that were farther away since he was 4. Apparently a lot changes between the ages of 3 and 4. And actually, I can't really believe that he is 4 myself...

We went to Chuck E. Cheese's in the morning from 9-11, which I was worried would be too early, but it turned out to be an excellent time to go. The kids (Annabelle, Haley, Thomas, Wade and Small Jack) ran around and played games (which all only cost 25 cents each) until the pizza arrived at 10:30. Again, I thought it would be a little early for pizza, but even the adults who said they probably wouldn't be hungry yet ate a piece or two. And as Mary put it, Chuck E. Cheese pizza has improved greatly in the last 30 years :) It was really good. We sang happy birthday, ate cupcakes, and everyone left when they wanted to. It was very stress-free. And I didn't have to clean my house.

We came back home and I tried to lay Lily down for a nap, but she wasn't having any of it. I guess she didn't want to miss any of Wade's special day. So, we opened presents and Wade wanted to play with all of them, right now! He headed outside to play with his new wheelbarrow, gardening tools, dump truck and Star Wars nerf-type gun. Poor dogs, I think they got a few shots to the head before I noticed that Wade was using them for target practice.

I tried to lay Lily down again, but still no luck. So, I went out front to put her in the swing and Wade rode his new scooter in the street. It was harder than he anticipated, so he traded it in for his bike and then his wheelbarrow and Star Wars gun.

All-in-all Wade had a terrific day; Lily napped for about 30 minutes but wasn't cranky at all; and I had no stress about the party. Win!

What happens when you let a 4 year old loose in a the store with birthday money? 2 bags of marbles, 2 packs of army guys, a gumball machine/bank, a basketball and an army helicopter and jeep. Thanks Aunt Jay & Uncle Pat!

**Finally got the rest of my pictures uploaded. Thanks Mary!!**
