Happy Halloween!

Here is the onslaught of this year's Halloween photos:

This year pumpkin carving was pretty fun. Wade dove right in and helped scrape out our pumpkin, but Lily wanted NOTHING to do with the slimy insides. Wade drew out a plan, and I carved it for him. Thankfully, it was a pretty simple design and turned out exactly as he wanted. However, the rain had other ideas. It stormed the night before Halloween and our poor jack 'o lantern was directly underneath our overflowing gutters. Turns out that a pumpkin makes a fantastic rain catcher... Until it rots and grows mold. Overnight. Wade was pretty upset and wanted a replacement, but then all the excitement of Halloween was upon us and he forgot about it. Whew.

Halloween day, Wade had school. I felt terrible that he wasn't even allowed to wear his costume to school, but he didn't know any different... While he was there, Lily (as Snow White, the first of her costumes) and I met Katie and her boys at the Old Settlers Fall Festival. Due to the rain (see moldy pumpkin above) they had to move a large outside event into a small indoor venue. Super crowded is an understatement, especially with a toddler. So, we hung out in the parking lot (where there a few games set up) and mingled with the super heroes (the theme of the festival this year). Lily LOVED Batman and wanted to give him continuous high fives, but then the Incredible Hulk showed up and after one fist bump, she was done with that creepy green guy. I did feel a little guilty that Wade couldn't enjoy the festival with us, but I have to keep reminding myself that he has had years of fun activities and this is part of the season of him growing up and being at school during the day.

I've always loved Halloween and although I have donned a costume more years than not, I have taken the last few years off. This year I was a very simple scarecrow, but I just LOVE dressing up and am glad I did. Wade was thrilled that his mom was joining in the fun, and Lily was quite taken with the makeup on my face. Wade, of course, was a Ninja Turtle (Raphael, to be exact) and Lily was an adorable bumble bee (second costume of the day).

This year, we decided to forgo trick or treating in the usual sense and instead head to another fall festival at Katie's church. It was really fun and the kids were so overwhelmed with games, rock climbing, bounce houses and candy that Wade didn't even miss trick or treating. Katie and her family were there, dressed as Velma, Shaggy and Scooby. And little Ford was from the Lollypop Guild of the Wizard of Oz, so cute! Wade and Jack had a blast running around and playing all the games, using their glow in the dark swords to fight and even put on some HUGE blow up boxing gloves to throw some punches. What a blast! We even got home at a reasonable hour with just enough sweets to look like a lot (but not nearly as much as last year- which I just threw out), so everybody was happy. Halloween 2013- success!
